Joint swellings should be aspirated - a procedure which can be both diagnostic and therapeutic.

Intra articular fractures require accurate internal fixation in order to prevent later development of OA.

Splintage of the joint - ranging from double tubigrip support (DTS) to backslab and POP cylinder.

Analgesia - strength dictated by the nature of the injury:

  • weak analgesia - coproxamol, aspirin
  • medium analgesia - diclofenac
  • strong analgesia - opiates - e.g. pethidine
