bile

Bile is a yellow, viscous liquid produced by the liver at a rate of approximately 700ml per day. It is secreted from hepatocytes into biliary canaliculi and thence to the bile ducts. The bile ducts converge and pass the bile into the gallbladder for storage or onwards into the common bile duct to emerge at the duodenum.
The functions of bile include the digestion of fats and the excretion of bile pigments.
Derangements of biliary composition can lead to gallstones.
