The other common cause of a localised anal swelling is the perianal haematoma. This lesion is always covered by skin, which distinguishes it from the mucosa-covered prolapsed haemorrhoid.

Another cause of bright red blood passed per rectum associated with the passing of stools is an anal fissure.

Other differentials are:

  • rectal prolapse
  • anal polyp
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • rectal carcinoma
