Management depends on:
- the patient's symptoms
- the need to conserve renal tissue, for example in patients who have only one functioning kidney, which has become hydronephrotic
- the severity of the hydronephrosis
Treatment options include:
- restoration of patency using a double J stent
- percutaneous nephrostomy
- reconstructive ureteric surgery
