nucleolus

The nucleolus is an ovoid structure within the nucleus of cells. It is very variable in size. During cell division, it cannot be discerned with the light microscope, but at times of protein synthesis it is very prominent. This reflects its role as the site of ribosomal RNA production and early ribosome formation.
