The sliding hiatus hernia has been called the great masquerader of the upper abdomen. Care must be taken to differentiate it from:
- cholelithiasis
- diverticulitis
- peptic ulcer
- achalasia
- angina pectoris - in advanced disease where there is reflux oesophagitis and pain referred to the chest
