transrectal biopsy of the prostate

Last reviewed 01/2018

Transrectal ultrasonography is a sensitive technique for detecting prostatic carcinoma.

Most prostatic carcinomata are hypoechoic; however most hypoechoic regions are benign.

Transrectal ultrasonography with transrectal biopsy should be performed when:

  • digital rectal examination is suggestive of carcinoma
  • prostate specific antigen levels are raised

Transrectal ultrasonography is also useful in the diagnosis of prostatitis.
