A diuretic is a compound which increases urine excretion.
The general principal of action is the inhibition of electolyte reabsorption from the lumen of the nephron. Electrolytes which stay in the lumen increase the osmolarity and enhance water excretion.
Most diuretics partly work by natriuresis.
