Often this condition is of insidious onset with worsening glomerular filtration:

  • growth retardation
  • anorexia
  • nocturia
  • enuresis
  • hypertension
  • bone pain may result from renal osteodystrophy in severe disease

With end stage disease features may include oliguria, features of uraemia and anaemia.

An acute crisis may be precipitated by events such as a urinary tract infection, and extrarenal infection may place increased catabolic demands on the child, causing vomiting and resulting in acute reduction in glomerular filtration rate.
