bacteriuria (in a CSU sample)

  • the presence of a catheter for even a few days will invariably lead to a bacteriuria with up to five different organisms. Unless the patient is symptomatic, collection of a CSU and antibiotic treatment should be discouraged
  • the presence of bacteriuria may denote colonisation rather than infection
