In type II diabetes:- measure urinary albumin:creatinine ratio or albumin concentration annually
- measure serum creatinine annually
- classify albumin excretion annually as:
- lower risk (absence of microalbuminuria or proteinuria), or
- higher risk
- microalbuminuria - albumin:creatinine ratio >= 2.5mg/mmol (men) or 3.5 mg/mmol (women), or albumin concentration >= 20mg/l and/or
- proteinuria - albumin:creatinine ratio >= 30 mg/mmol or albumin concentration >= 200mg/ml
