This differential diagnosis of rectal carcinoma includes:
- a benign rectal tumour
- a carcinoma of the sigmoid that has prolapsed through the pouch of Douglas
- uterine or ovarian tumours
- secondaries in the pelvis
- extension from a prostatic or cervical carcinoma
- endometriosis
- diverticular disease
- lymphogranuloma inguinale
- amoebic granuloma
