Hypovolaemic shock is a state in which the patient's blood pressure falls due to fluid loss, such that vital organs are not perfused adequately.
In young and fit patients, compensated shock may occur where despite considerable fluid loss, the blood pressure is maintained, until the preterminal phase. This makes diagnosis difficult and means that shock should be treated vigorously.
