Some regions of the human skeleton have a much higher tendency to develop ischaemia and bone necrosis after injury. Most commonly, these are:
- neck of femur - avascular necrosis of this area may occur after fracture of the femoral neck or dislocation of the hip
- proximal pole of the scaphoid bone - avascular necrosis may occur after fracture through the waist of the scaphoid
- body of the talus - after a fracture through its neck
