The fingers of both hands should rest on the greater trochanter of each femur. Using these sites as fixed points, the thumbs of each hand are pivoted inferomedially from the anterior superior iliac spines along the line of the inguinal ligaments. Approaching the midline, the pubic tubercles are felt as prominences at the lateral edges of the pubic crest.
The pubic tubercles lie at the same horizontal level as the greater trochanters.
