Fracture Intervention Trial

Last edited 10/2019

A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial (Fracture intervention Trial FIT) performed by Black et al (Lancet 1996) has revealed that alendronate safely reduced the frequency of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures in postmenopausal women with low bone mass density.

1022 women were assigned to the alendronate (treatment group) and 1005 women were assigned to placebo.

  • women receiving alendronate increased mean bone mass measured at the femoral neck, total hip, posterior-anterior lumbar spine, whole body and proximal forearm. Eight per cent of the treatment group (compared to 15% in the placebo group) had >=1 vertebral fracture
