examination under microscope

Last reviewed 01/2018

Examination of the external ear under the microscope is a common procedure in ENT.

A speculum is placed in the external ear and the pinna retracted.

The good lighting and magnification facilitate:

  • dewaxing of the external ear canal
  • removal of foreign bodies
  • minor surgery e.g. myringotomy and grommet insertion
  • suction removal of debris from the ear
