tonsillar herniation

The clinical features of tonsillar herniation include:

  • neck stiffness and head tilt - from impaction in the foramen magnum

  • bradycardia and blood pressure rise:
    • Cushing's Law - due to pressure on the brain stem cardiovascular nuclei

  • respiratory irregularities - possibly leading to respiratory arrest

  • may be some upward cerebellar herniation through the tentorial hiatus
