complications

Last reviewed 12/2021

The complications of GORD include:

  • severe erosive oesophagitis
  • Barrett's oesophagus
  • oesophageal carcinoma
  • oesophageal stricture
  • haematemesis
  • melaena
  • iron deficiency anaemia

Studies have shown that GORD may worsen or contribute to asthma, chronic cough, and pulmonary fibrosis (1).

Not all patients with GORD develop complications.

There is a poor correlation between symptomatic severity and pathological severity of oesophageal disease.
