neonatal mastitis (infective)

Last reviewed 01/2018

Neonatal mastitis is an uncommon condition

  • occurs in full term infants in the first few weeks of life
  • girls are affected twice as often as boys
  • initial management consists of intravenous antibiotics, while in cases of abscess formation, incision and drainage is indicated

Notes:

  • breast abscess complicating neonatal mastitis may affect future development of the breast involved
    • therefore optimisation of clinical management aiming to reduce the possibility of abscess formation seems reasonable
    • for patients treated with incision and drainage in infancy, planned, long-term follow up is recommended
