Lofgren syndrome

Is an acute presentation of sarcoidosis.

  • consists of erythema nodosum, arthralgia, systemic malaise, and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on chest radiography
  • common in northern European countries, rare in patients of African or Japanese origin.
    • It is seen in
      • 30% of Caucasians with sarcoidosis
      • 10% of Asians
      • but is rare in blacks (2)
  • a clinical diagnosis of sarcoidosis can be assumed without tissue conformation in patients with Löfgren syndrome (1)
  • is strongly associated with H LA DQB1*0201 in British and Dutch patients
  • prognosis is excellent and the patients usually recover spontaneously (1)
