Medical treatment is with high dose steroids. 65% of patients with optic neuropathy will respond initially, though relapse is common after treatment.

Orbital radiation may also be used with concurrent steroids. Response occurs after 2-3 weeks and is maximal after 6-12 months.

Surgery may also be used to decompress the optic nerve, and similarly to protect the cornea, correct ocular muscle alignment and restore appearance of the eye.
