Interferons have been used to treat:
- HSV keratitis
- rhinovirus respiratory infection
- hepatitis; e.g. hepatitis BeAg carriers with chronic active hepatitis. Achieves about a 30% success rate possibly due to a mild hepatitis resulting in greater recognition of infected cells. The major side effect is that treatment may cause liver failure.
- hairy cell leukaemia
- Kaposi's sarcoma
- multiple sclerosis
- advanced renal cell carcinoma
- chronic granulomatous disease
