unicompartmental knee replacement
Last reviewed 01/2018
When joint disease is limited to either the medial or lateral portion of the tibiofemoral joint the operation of choice is replacement of the single compartment.
Unicompartmental arthroplasty is not indicated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory poly- arthropathies.
The most common indication is the varus knee of a younger patient with osteoarthritis of the medial compartment of the knee joint.
Results with unicompartmental knee replacements such as the "Oxford knee" are now so good that osteotomy has been replaced in these circumstances.
