The electroencephalogram is a useful tool in the investigation of epileptic seizures, especially in children and neonates. However, it should not be regarded as a pure diagnostic tool; rather it is better in the differentiation of different types of seizure, as follows:

  • distinguishing absences from complex partial seizures
  • distinguishing primary and secondary generalised seizures
  • distinguishing absence episodes from daydreaming
  • characterising electromechanical syndromes
