Clinical features of UTI may be typical or atypical (1).
Most patients often presents with features of cystitis:
- abrupt onset
- multiple symptoms - dysuria, increased frequency and urgency
- suprapubic or low back pain
- suprapubic tenderness on examination
A febrile patient may have either prostatitis (associated with perineal pain) or pyelonephritis (associated loin pain) (1).
In some instances the UTI may mimic urethritis with a urethral discharge and urethral leucocytosis.
Less commonly patients may have atypical symptoms such as confusion, incontinence or a fall (especially in elderly patients) (1).
