There is an association between familial dysbetalipoproteinaemia and homozygosity for apolipoprotein E2. This form of apoE may result in a reduced rate of IDL uptake by the liver.
Environmental factors are also important, these include:
- obesity
- diabetes mellitus
- hypothyroidism
- alcohol consumption
