Drugs and toxins which can cause autonomic failure include:

  • hypotensive drugs:
    • beta-blockers
    • alpha-blockers
    • centrally-acting hypotensives:
      • clonidine
      • methyl-dopa
    • captopril
  • þ alcohol:

      • direct neurotoxicity
      • complications of thiamine deficiency (Wernicke's encephalopathy)

    • antidepressants:
      • tricyclics
      • monoamine oxidase inhibitors
