left inferior lobe (lung)

Last reviewed 01/2018

The inferior lobe of the left lung is divided into five bronchopulmonary segments. These are largely produced on the basis of the first set of divisions of the right inferior lobe bronchus. They are homologous to the lobes of the inferior lobes of the right lung:

  • apical or superior bronchopulmonary segment; left bronchopulmonary segment number six - supplied by apical segmental bronchus
  • medial basal or cardiac bronchopulmonary segment; left bronchopulmonary segment number seven - supplied by medial basal segmental bronchus
  • anterior basal bronchopulmonary segment; left bronchopulmonary segment number eight - supplied by anterior basal segmental bronchus
  • lateral basal bronchopulmonary segment; left bronchopulmonary segment number nine - supplied by lateral basal segmental bronchus
  • posterior basal bronchopulmonary segment; left bronchopulmonary segment number ten - supplied by posterior basal segmental bronchus
