amantadine in parkinsonism

Last reviewed 01/2018

Amantadine increases dopamine release and inhibits its uptake at dopaminergic synapses.

It may be effective in mild parkinsonism. The usual dose in 100mg bd. An effect is usually evident within 3 days.

Amantadine may be used as a treatment for people with early Parkinson's disease (PD) but should not be a drug of first choice (1).

Amantadine may be used to reduce dyskinesia in people with later PD (1).
