complications

Possible complications of ankle ligament injury include:

  • recurrence of the injury, as a result of improper treatment with physiotherapy and failure to fully regain proper proprioception

  • adhesions - if these form following an ankle sprain then the patient may complain that the ankle 'gives way' and persistently fails to function normally. Active exercises may restore full painless movement. If this fails then the joint be manipulated under anaesthesia

  • recurrent subluxation
