- increased resistance to portal blood flow - the usual mechanism:
- pre-hepatic
- hepatic i.e. pre-sinusoidal and sinusoidal
- post-sinusoidal
- increased portal blood flow - less common:
- arterio-venous fistula
- increased splenic flow:
- splenomegaly
- Banti's syndrome
- Cruveilhier-Baugmarten syndrome
