non-ketotic diabetic acidosis

Last reviewed 01/2018

It should be remembered that the acidosis of a diabetic crisis is not always caused by ketones.

Occasionally other anions may be the cause, these include:

  • lactic acid
  • formic acid in methanol poisoning
  • alpha ketoglutarate in liver failure
  • phosphate in renal failure

For these reasons the presence of ketones in the blood should be checked for all patients in a diabetic coma.
