  • trisomies, in particular Down's, also 18 and 13 (although a low AFP is not as accurate in predicting Down's as a high AFP is in predicting spina bifida).

  • a low AFP may be seen in mothers who have diabetes, with no implication of trisomy.

  • overestimation of gestation

  • above average maternal weight

  • spontaneous abortion

  • some molar pregnancies

  • non-viable pregnancy
