neoplastic causes of scoliosis

Last reviewed 01/2018

Generally speaking, scoliosis caused by a bone neoplasm is rare since these don't generally cross the bone plate. However:

  • lytic metastases can cause scoliosis
  • osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma cause a painful scoliosis

Surgery to tumours, in particular thoracotomy in the very young, and radiotherapy given asymmetrically - e.g. to Wilm's tumours - may result in scoliosis.

Intracanal tumours cause painful scoliosis, and are hard to diagnose.
