Causes of non-dental jaw pain include:

  • pain referred from the nose, throat, ear or eye
  • neuralgia (such as trigeminal, post-herpetic etc)
  • temporomandibular joint pain
  • migraine
  • cervical disc lesion
  • angina pectoris
  • cranial arteritis
  • intracranial lesion affecting the afferent branch of the trigeminl nerve
