Night blindness is a term used to describe impaired vision in situations of poor illumination.
It may complicate vitamin A deficiency as vitamin A is an essential component of the rod pigment, rhodopsin. It may also be a prominent symptom in many different inherited retinal dystrophies of which retinitis pigmentosa is the most common.
Retinitis pigmentosa may be detected using the electroretinogram.
