Long term effects are mainly neurologic:
- permanent brain damage, cerebral palsy, mental handicap in severe asphyxia
- fits, hyperactivity, and learning difficulties in less severe asphyxia
mental handicap (previously used term now replaced by learning disability)
hyperactivity (hyperkinetic syndrome)
