The tertiary stage of yaws may follow the earlier stages of the disease or may develop after a gap of years.
There are gummatous lesions of the skin which may ulcerate deeply and are subject to secondary infection, which results in deformity.
Bone lesions result in massive deformity after osteoporosis, necrosis and new bone formation have taken their toll.
There are firm, painless subcutaneous juxta-articular nodes which can be 10cm across in late yaws.
