The differential diagnosis involves:
- vaginitis or vulvovaginal infections e.g. - Gardnerella, Candida albicans, Trichomonas, bacterial vaginosis – look for any vaginal discharge
- sexually transmitted diseases - inquire about sexual activity and recent change of partner
- urethral syndrome
- interstitial cystitis
- dysmenorrhoea (1)
