phalangeal fracture dislocation

Last reviewed 01/2018

Injury to one of the interphalangeal joints may occur from:

  • a direct blow - often with associated soft tissue injury
  • forcible hyperextension
  • forcible stubbing of a straight finger

X-ray may show that an avulsed fragment of bone.

These injuries are difficult to treat and, poorly managed, may result in considerable stiffening from fibrosis and scarring.
