The specific causes of this condition include:
- nearly all general anaesthetic agents
- muscle relaxants such as suxamethonium
Drugs which appear to be safe to use in this condition include diazepam, thiopentone, fentanyl, nitrous oxide and tubocurarine.
The underlying disorder may be a disorder of the ryanodine calcium channel receptor; there is a known association with central core disease.
It is sometimes inherited as an autosomal dominant trait on chromosome 19.
