complications

These are complications of proptosis and include:-
- chemosis (oedema of the conjunctivae)
- conjunctivitis
- corneal ulceration
- optic atrophy (rare and possibly due to stretching of the optic nerve)
- ophthalmoplegia (at first the inferior oblique muscle is lost and then convergence is weakened)
If there is central exposure to the cornea then there may be an urgent requirement for a central tarsorrhaphy to protect the dissected cornea.
