complications

Last reviewed 01/2018

These are complications of proptosis and include:-

  • chemosis (oedema of the conjunctivae)
  • conjunctivitis
  • corneal ulceration
  • optic atrophy (rare and possibly due to stretching of the optic nerve)
  • ophthalmoplegia (at first the inferior oblique muscle is lost and then convergence is weakened)

If there is central exposure to the cornea then there may be an urgent requirement for a central tarsorrhaphy to protect the dissected cornea.
