haemolytic anaemia

Haemolytic anaemias are all characterized by:

  • shortening of the normal red cell life span, i.e. less than 120 days
  • accumulation of the products of haemoglobin metabolism
  • a marked increase in erythropoiesis in the bone marrow

They can be intrinsic or extrinsic.
