posterior column fracture

Last reviewed 01/2018

This fracture runs between:

  • the obturator foramen, and
  • the sciatic notch

It fractures the weight-bearing portion of the acetabulum.

An ischiopubic column of bone is separated from the pelvis which may cause sciatic nerve damage.

Posterior column fractures are usually associated with posterior dislocation of the hip.

Treatment is urgent. Internal fixation is usually required to give a stable hip joint.
