Haemophilus influenzae

Haemophilus influenzae is a major bacterial cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. It is a small Gram- negative bacillus that is non-motile and non-sporing.
In the past, and in unvaccinated populations, it is responsible for 60% of bacterial meningitis in children, of which 4 to 5% is fatal.
There are 11,000 cases per year in children younger than 5 years in the USA.
