furunculosis (external canal)

Furunculosis (sometimes known as localised otitis externa) of the external canal is a condition that results from infection of a hair follicle - and therefore occurs in the latter part of the meatus, with the persistent sequential occurrence of furuncles in the external canal (outer third of the external canal) (1).
The pain is far greater than the size of the lesion would indicate. The causative organism is most often staphylococcus.
