Causes of a glossopharyngeal nerve palsy can be divided into those of central and peripheral origin:
Central causes including:
- tumours
- vascular lesions, e.g. lateral medullary syndrome
- syringobulbia
- motor neurone disease
Peripheral - posterior fossa - causes including:
- tumours
- aneurysms
- chronic meningitis
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
