- disorder that is principally mediated by antibodies to platelet antigens that leads to increased platelet destruction.
- there is also relative marrow failure - this may be mediated by an effect of antiplatelet antibodies on megakaryocytes - platelet production is not appropriately increased in most patients.
- most commonly autoantibodies are directed against epitopes on glycoprotein IIb/IIIa.
