The first presentation is that of a patient who has not passed urine after surgery.
- history and examination
- stand up and give a bottle (for men)
- put in a catheter
- if there is a catheter in situ, check that it isn't blocked; if necessary perform a bladder washout
- put on / look at fluid balance chart
- assess fluid input
